College Scholarship Opportunities with GHS FCU
GHS’s Scholarship Program offers our membership and community two scholarship opportunities for high school seniors attending two- or four-year accredited educational institutions for the first time in the coming year.
Our mission is to help our community achieve financial wellness, and avoiding debt is an important step in attaining that goal. For young adults building on the foundations of their financial situations, debt – especially student loan debt – can put the upcoming generation at a disadvantage. Additionally, one of the biggest barriers for students interested in continuing education is cost and fear of going too far into debt.
*To be eligible, students must be high school seniors attending two- or four-year accredited educational institutions for the first time in the fall of 2025. They must also be members of GHS Federal Credit Union.

How to Apply:
*To be eligible, students must be high school seniors attending two- or four-year accredited educational institutions for the first time in the fall of 2025. They must also be members of GHS Federal Credit Union.
Contact GHS to obtain a credit union verification code to verify eligibility – call (800) 732-4447. If the student is not a member of GHS Federal Credit Union, he/she can become a member by opening an account. All scholarship applicants are required to be members of a participating New York credit union.
Complete the application form and required essay and obtain the required transcripts, along with the signature of a parent or guardian.
Upload and submit the completed application and supportive materials to the online portal no later than January 17, 2025.
There is no fee for submitting an application, but applicants MUST be:
Members of GHS Federal Credit Union;
College-bound high school seniors at the time of application; and
Attending either a two- or four-year accredited educational institution for the first time in the fall of 2025.
In early spring, applications will be judged against other submissions statewide.
Winners will be announced in May, 2025.
Applicants will be judged based on academic achievements, extracurricular and community activities, and the quality of written essays.

GHS Federal Credit Union began offering scholarship opportunities to our members starting in 2020, with our first awards in 2021. In 2020, GHS proudly participated in the New York Credit Union Association’s (NYCUA) statewide scholarship program, which offers eligible students a chance to win funds ranging from $500 to $1,500 for the upcoming academic year. In addition to offering this scholarship opportunity, GHS executive staff and Board of Directors instated our own scholarship, awarding students up to $2,000.
The program has an immense impact on college-bound students across New York State. In 2022, in addition to GHS’s $2,000 scholarship recipient, the NYCUA awarded $26,250 in scholarships to 45 talented students across the state. The initiative reflects the credit union's core philosophy of community engagement and empowerment.
It is an honor to aid our members and provide young members with financial assistance and support as they embark on the next chapter of their journey. Scholarship FAQ
Who can apply?
GHS members are eligible to apply to the scholarship program through GHS. If you are not a member yet, join today! Anyone who lives, works, attends school, worships or volunteers in Broome, Chenango or Tioga County, or anyone who is related to someone meeting those qualifications, are eligible to join GHS.
Where do I apply?
Download and fill our the application here on our website, then submit the application to the online portal with supporting documents.
What if I miss the deadline?
Unfortunately the deadline is a final date. We will not accept any applications past the date specified.
How do I get my verification code?
Call GHS at 800-732-4447, and ask for the verification code for submitting an application.
Can I win both scholarships?
Yes! While we offer both opportunities through GHS, the NYCUA scholarships are selected by their panel, while GHS board and executives select the winners of our scholarship. You are able to win both!
Do I need two (2) applications for both scholarships?
No, you only need to complete the application and submit your materials to the NYCUA site. We will receive all of our applicants from them to select our winners with the same materials and criteria.
